Fjolbrautaskoli Sudurlands is a college of further education

the largest educational institution in the south of Iceland.

The town of Selfoss is located in the heart of South Iceland, approximately 50 km east of the capital, Reykjavik.



Iceland (Ísland) is a Nordic island country in the North Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 334.282 and an area of 103,000 km2, making it the most sparsely populated country in Europe. The capital and largest city is Reykjavík. Reykjavík and the surrounding areas in the southwest of the country are home to over two-thirds of the population. Reykjavík is the most northen capital city in the world.


Selfoss serves as the district's center for: administration, industry, commerce and other services.

Selfoss is in the vicinity of some of the country's most popular tourist attractions. 



Selfoss is a town of about 7.218 people in South Iceland, by the banks of the river Ölfusa, one of the largest rivers in the country. It is located around 57 km from Reykjavik. The town is a centre of commerce, farming, and small industries in South Iceland.

The school was founded in 1981.


The school buildings are financed jointly by the State and the local communities, but the operating costs, teachers’ salaries etc. are paid by the state.

In the spring of 2017 there are  around 700 students in the day school and 170 in remote learning.  Most of the students are 16 to 20 years of age but some all up to 50-60 plus .

Teachers are around 85 and other staff 45

ICT has always played a big role in the school environment.

Special lines for disabled children

The school has a department in the main Icelandic prison, close to Selfoss.


How to graduate

To finish the school and be able to go to university each student has to collect 200 units. 

At least 33 units on level 3, 

At least 67 on level 2 (134 units must be on level 2 or 3)

no more than 67 on level 1. (could be more if students have 134 units on level 2 and 3)


Usually it takes 3-4 years but it can be done in 2 year.  Some courses are compulsory like Icelandic, English, Danish, sport, and third language, and also history, mathematics and so on, 101 units are compulsory.
