Bulgaria is like a miniature of all natural beauties

On a territory of nearly 111 000 square kilometers you can see and enjoy magnificent mountain ridges, cozy sand and stone beaches, green pastures and deep caves.

In the North is the Danube plain, bordering with the Balkan Ridge Mountain.

In the South is the Thracian Lowland, bordering with the Rila, Pirin and the Rhodopes Mountains.

To the East is the 354 km Black sea coastline.

 

 

NATURE

Arda river and the Devil’s Bridge

 

The beautiful Arda river flows in the Rhodopa Mountain. One of the most impressive beauties of the river is a man’s creation and is called the Devil’s Bridge.

Belogradchik Rocks

These rocks resemble fantastic human figures up to 200 meters high and form a strip of land that s 30 km long and 3 km wide. Amongst these rocks is situated the inaccessible Belogradchik Castle – built in the Ist and IInd century.

Cape Kaliakra

Kaliakra is the most beautiful and the strangest place in the Bulgarian northern Black Sea.

The most popular story relates of how 40 girls with hairs and arms entwined jumped into the sea to evade falling into Ottoman hands.

Today there is an obelisk called "The gate of the 40 maidens".

Prohodna Cave

It is a unique nature creation and is the highest cave in Bulgaria: 47 meters high.

In the middle of the cave is the phenomenon “God’s eyes” – two holes on the ceiling of the cave. 

 

HISTORY AND CULTURE

Bulgaria is a cradle and crossroad of ancient civilizations. Thracians, Romans, Slavs and Bulgars have left their mark in the past on the culture of Bulgaria contributing to a heritage that combines long history, fine literature and unique folklore.

Bulgaria is the birthplace of the Cyrillic alphabet, which was developed in Preslav and Ohrid Literary Schools during the tenth century.

More than 200 million people from different countries today use the developed version of the Cyrillic alphabet, which by 1 January 2007 become European Union official alphabet.

 

BULGARIA’S WORLD HERITAGE SITES

Bulgaria has by now seven cultural and two natural sites included in the UNESCO List of the World Natural and Cultural Heritage:

1. The Madara Horseman (the only rock relief from the medieval times in Europe);

2. & 3. The Kazanlak and Sveshtari Thracian Tombs (4th and 3rd century BC);

4. The Rila Monastery;

5. The Boyana Church near Sofia;

6. The Rock-hewn churches of Ivanovo (dug out of the limestone cliffs and inhabited until the 17th century);

7. The ancient city of Nessebar on the Black Sea coast.

8. & 9. Pirin National Park and Srebarna biosphere reserve for their incredible biodiversity.

 

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

The education in Bulgaria is opening to the world and the needs of the knowledge based economy. The academic programs are developed in line with the European Bologna process.

18th COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL
“WILLIAM GLADSTONE”

  

18th Comprehensive School "William Gladstone" is one of the oldest schools not only in Sofia, but also in Bulgaria, founded in 1906 and housed in a unique architectural building - monument of culture.

 

In this school have studied, taught and completed their life career many of the most prominent Bulgarian scientists, writers, poets, artists and politicians.

 

The educational profile of the school is linked with the intensive learning of European and Eastern languages ​​- English, French, German, Spanish, Russian, Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Arabic languages.


Currently, the number of students in school is 2250, which makes it the largest school in Bulgaria.

 

TEACHING STAFF

The academic staff of 127 teachers is being enriched by young specialists graduated in prestigious Bulgarian Universities and abroad.

Over 15 percent of the faculty has undergone training programs in many European countries, as well as training programs for teachers of Chinese language at the University of Nanchang, China. Five of our teachers have a PhD in Education and Science Studies or are currently in a PhD programs.
60 percent of our teachers are fluent in English at levels B2 and C1 upon CEFR and apply interactive methods in their class work.

Since 2013 18th comprehensive school "William Gladstone" started the implementation of the platform e-learning – MOODLE (Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment)

The different modules of the platform allows to combine traditional with interactive teaching methods, and to better communicate between teachers, students and parents.

16 European schools from Bulgaria, Denmark, Hungary and Slovenia will participate in educational partnerships with 16 African schools from Ghana, Kenya and Sierra Leone. The aim of the cooperation is to make teachers and students more aware of the global world we are part of, to motivate students to better understand and to play an active role in finding solutions to global challenges.

 

EUROSCOLA  2011
Project of the European Parliament in Strasbourg

The project involved 28 secondary school students and two teachers.

The team – winner of the final competition - included two of our high school students.

    

Japan and Europe Exchange program

National Competition for Japanesespeakers.

Six months exchange in Japan for High school students at the Universities of Tokyo and Kyoto;

Study visits for students to practice the Japanese tea ceremony "Urasenke" in Tokyo and Kyoto;
